Properly cutting and setting a marble or tile floor takes a talented, skilled artisan – the only kind sought and retained by Jon Oen. Manually applying and leveling a cement substrate for a floor, or “pulling mud,” is the only process used by Hercules Construction. A bed of cement substrate corrects uneven floors, stops squeaks, creates a solid, level foundation and provides a superior hold for the flooring adhesive. This process, and the quality material insisted upon by Hercules Construction, results in beautiful, strong, long lasting and easy to maintain tile and marble floors.
It may be said that cement board, a relative of drywall, is “just as good” as a cement substrate. Actually, such a statement is an excuse for a short cut to speed the flooring process and lower costs (or increase profit) or to cover for a crew that lacks the skill to “pull mud.” Cement board can only follow the uneven contours of a floor, not correct them. It cannot eliminate the movement between floor boards and beams that cause squeaky floors. Even the seams between cement boards are subject to movement. Individually or together, these minute movements will eventually cause the tile adhesive to fail or the floor material to crack.
